Avon Justine iThemba Crusade for Hope
In March 2001, Avon Justine launched the iThemba Crusade of Hope to help spread education and awareness about breast cancer across South Africa. iThemba is a Zulu word which means "hope". So far Avon Justine has raised in excess of R6 million through the sale of special "pink ribbon" products for breast cancer education and awareness in South Africa.
Breast Cancer Awareness Conferences
iThemba's first breast cancer awareness conferences were held in 2009 to educate Gauteng nurses and community health workers about breast cancer. Various breast cancer specialists and government officials addressed the conference and breast cancer awareness materials were distributed to all delegates.
Look Good...Feel Better Ladies' Days
In 2009, Avon Justine iThemba sponsored two ladies' days for Look Good...Feel Better, an organisation that provides inspirational beauty workshops for women undergoing cancer treatment. This programme has proven hugely effective in motivating and inspiring cancer patients. The second annual Ladies Day was hosted on Saturday, 28 August 2010 with the third scheduled for Saturday, 27 August 2011 at Summer Place in Johannesburg. All the funds raised at the Avon Justine iThemba Ladies Day is donated to Look Good…Feel Better.
CANSA Mobile Units
iThemba has funded two mobile units for CANSA to promote awareness of breast and cervical cancer in rural areas. The units also conduct pap smears and breast examinations.
Mobile Breast Cancer Educational Unit
In 2009, iThemba launched a mobile breast cancer educational unit in the district of Sebokeng. Staffed by two community educators who are themselves breast cancer survivors, the unit travels throughout the region to help with the early detection of breast cancer. In 2009, the unit reached over 30 000 women.
Mammography course bursaries
The Avon Justine iThemba Crusade of Hope offers bursaries to 8 students every year to complete mammography courses which are crucial in early detection.
